Garden Planning workshop
It was a beautifully sunny day when we held our Garden Planning workshop last Sunday afternoon!
At 2pm there were only 4 of us and we were contemplating postponing it for another day when the phone rang, and someone asked where the workshop was! People had gathered in the gardens waiting for us and once the confusion was cleared and everybody came up to Te Ara Pae Ora, there were 16 of us! What a great turnout of keen people on such a sunny afternoon!
I had never really planned my gardens; I am more of a spontaneous, erratic gardener but always wanted to be more organized and planned. So, when I was introduced to the Koanga Garden’s way of planning, I thought it would be a good idea to learn about it and try to apply some of their strategies. After completing their online class on garden planning, I put together this workshop to share some of their ideas and ways of planning.
In this workshop I covered and explained the 7 steps of Garden Planning:
1 Decide on your crop rotation system 2 understand the master-chart 3 plan your summer crops 4 choose your winter crops 5 Complete the crop rotation planner 6 Fill out your Action Plan 7 complete the garden map.
I have adapted and simplified some of their resources to help you with your planning (Download here).
Of course, there are many different ways of planning your garden and I would encourage you to use your own intuition and knowledge to adapt and change what you learnt so it suits your way of gardening. And if something works better, I would love to hear from you with your feed-back and suggestions. Nothing is set in concrete, and we are all here to learn from each other.
After the workshop we enjoyed beautiful kai and juice made by our wonderful Nutritionist Lavern. For me, always the best part of our workshops is meeting new people, socializing and sharing knowledge.
Thank you all so much for coming along to the workshop and supporting our Teaching Gardens at WHST.
Look out for the upcoming workshops …
